Last Saturday was Groundhog Day in the US. It’s a fun, traditional holiday that gets you through the drudge of winter especially when you live in the part of the country where it snows all winter. It also inspired the funny movie Groundhog Day starring Bill Murray. The premise of the movie is Bill’s character, Phil, repeats the same day (Groundhog Day, February 2nd) over and over again with no one else aware but Phil. I often find that we experience the same thing with how we handle our finances.
We mean well, but often we do the same thing over and over with our finances and expect to get different results. But we get frustrated when we continue to get the same results we have been getting and we feel like we are living the same day over and over. Whether it is not knowing where your money is going each month, working hard only to have just enough to pay the bills, not having any money left over at the end of the month to enjoy, or hoping next month will be different, we need to realize that if we keep doing the same thing and expecting a different result we are going to continue to be disappointed.
Granted, I don’t know your situation to know what the key issue is. Maybe it’s that you don’t have enough money coming in. Maybe it’s disorganization or not properly prioritizing your spending. But I do know that your situation is not permanent and that you can change; you don’t have to live the same financial day over and over again. But you first must swallow your pride and make the changes needed to live the way you want.
